Purchased in the 1970s by Atlanta industrialist Pat Pattillo, Hacienda Pinilla condominiums sit within a “finca madre” or “mother farm” that spans 5,000+ acres in total and multiple beaches ranging from Playa Langosta on the north end to Playa Avellanas on the southern end and just sits just north of the rural town of Pinilla.
You’ll frequently see it spelled and pronounced “Hacienda Panilla,” perhaps because of all the southern US ties to the project. The correct pronunciation is PEE-NEE-YA.
“The Hacienda” or “HP” as some locals refer to it, requires all visitors to pass through its security gates to access the amenities.
Within the development, there are various parcels that have since been developed into unique condos with their own condominium owners’ associations.

For foreigner travelers, you’ll enter the country from either San Jose or Liberia. From either, you can then drive or take a local flight to the Tamarindo airport, and drive or catch a shuttle to your Hacienda Pinilla vacation rental.
What Are the Hacienda Pinilla Condominiums?
Las Golondrinas
The original beachfront condo development within Hacienda Pinilla is what’s known as a horizontal condominium development. It’s comprised of individual lots with zoning for what types of single-family homes are permissible, and many of them are absolutely gorgeous.
La Reserva de Golf
Located along the Robert Trent Jones golf course at Hacienda Pinilla, Reserva de Golf is also a horizontal condominium development with zoning for single-family home construction. This was the second single-family home condo to open within the Hacienda.
Las Brisas
Along with Los Almendros, this phase was opened during the sub-prime mortgage real estate boom in the early 2000s. This is another single-family home condo development within Hacienda Pinilla.
Los Almendros
Made for sale at the same time as Las Brisas, this is another single-family home condominium development within Hacienda Pinilla.
Avellanas Residential Community
The second beachfront residential community at Hacienda Pinilla, the Avellanas Residential Community fronts Playa Avellanas is next to the Avellanas Beach Club amenity.
La Dulce Vida Residential Community

What Are the Hacienda Pinilla Condominium Amenities?
Refer to each condo development for its amenities within its particular zone. All owners within Hacienda Pinilla have access to great shared amenities within the confines of the property including restaurants. Many guests also like to venture out to the best Tamarindo restaurants and then enjoy the nightlife.
Avellanas Beach Club
Located at the top of Playa Avellanas and basically in front of the famous surfing wave “Little Hawaii,” the beach club has a large pool with kid-friendly section, a snack bar, and a meeting area on the second floor. Many Hacienda Pinilla visitors make it their base at the beach and they can come and go from Playa Avellanas.
“El Corral” / HOYO19
The golf clubhouse is a great place to grab lunch and of course, where you’ll need to head to get your golf cart, purchase equipment, etc. The restaurant is elevated and has a nice view of the Audobon golf course.
Tennis Courts
Sharing parking with El Corral, Hacienda Pinilla has a well-maintained tennis facility. Reserve courts to make use of them.
J.W. Marriott
Run as the premier Marriott brand, the “JW” as locals call it has a number of its own restaurants that are available to Hacienda Pinilla owners and guests.
Stables
The Hacienda maintains its own horses for guests to enjoy on guided tours. They are also used to move the grazing cattle found within the undeveloped parts of the community.
