Playa Conchal Vacation Rentals

Fully-Stocked Properties Walking Distance to the Beach

At Coastal Realty & Property Management, we’ve been managing Playa Conchal vacation rentals since 2006, so we thought we’d share some advice for friends looking to visit for the first time.

Second and third-time visitors might enjoy these thoughts as well, because there’s a lot you can do when you stay in Playa Conchal.

Getting to Our Playa Conchal  Vacation Rentals

Playa Conchal Vacation RentalsWe have Costa Rican families that use our Playa Conchal Property Management services and have been visiting us from the San José area for more than a decade, but if you’re reading this, you’re more than likely an international tourist.

With tons of direct flights from both North America and Europe, you have two choices to fly into the country:

Daniel Oduber International Airport – Liberia

This airport is located a 1-hour drive from Playa Conchal. The drive is picturesque, with many Guanacaste sugar cane plantations visible as well as local town squares and soccer fields along the way. If you’re not renting a car, you might want to consider a private or shared shuttle to get to Playa Conchal from here.

Juan Santamaría International Airport – San José

This airport is about a 4-hour drive from Playa Conchal. The drive will take you through the mountain range that runs the length of Central America and then you’ll make your way up the coast, and cross over the Río Tempisque. It’s also quite scenic and there are plenty of restaurants and pitstops along the way.

If you’re flying to San José and don’t intend to rent a car, you can catch up a commuter flight (propeller plane) from San José to the local Tamarindo airport on Sansa and then take a shuttle to Playa Conchal or pick up a rental car in Tamarindo. Also, private and shared shuttles are available from San José to Playa Conchal on a daily basis.

Do I Need a Visa if I’m Choosing Playa Conchal Vacation Rentals?

For quick stays, you don’t need a visa prior to arrival. You’ll be issued a tourist visa (maximum 90 days) by the immigration desk at either airport. You’ll need:

  •       Your passport (and be sure it isn’t about to expire).
  •       A return ticket (print a copy of your e-ticket that clearly shows your return flight date).
  •       The name of your accommodations. For us, either the name of the house or the name of the Playa Conchal condo complex will suffice.
  •       At least $100 USD cash for each month you’re staying in Costa Rica.

Do I Need to Rent a Car to Get to My Playa Conchal Vacation Rental?

You don’t need to rent a car to get to Playa Conchal and our vacation rentals are all walkable to the beach, grocery stores, restaurants, shops, etc. We’re happy to help you book an airport shuttle from either airport that will take you directly to your property and return you as well.

Brasilito (the local neighborhood of Playa Conchal) and Playa Brasilito (the neighbor beach) are truly local experiences, both have walkable sodas, restaurants, and small grocery stores.

You can walk from one side to the other and don’t need to stay at the W or Westin resorts to visit this wonderful white-sanded beach, as many people might think, a 5-minute walk on the beach is all you need to do once you’re in Brasilito downtown.

That said, there are lots of nearby national parks and other fun day trips where you might want a car, the Flamingo Marina for example is about 5 minutes drive from Brasilito.

If you are renting a car and cannot drive a manual transmission, be sure to consult with your rental car company. Many vehicles in Costa Rica have manual transmissions.

What Are Some Top Activities While at a Playa Conchal Vacation Rental?

You’ve probably heard amazing things about Costa Rica and Playa Conchal is one of the best beaches in the country. Why do so many people choose to vacation in Playa Conchal?

Snorkeling

Playa Conchal Vacation Rentals

The Southern End of Playa Conchal

The crystal-clear water of Playa Conchal makes this activity so much more interesting and fun. You can literally see lots of fish swimming around everywhere from the surface, just standing on your feed, but once you go down, it’s a truly magical experience that you won’t want to end. It’s easy to watch turtles, jellyfish and lots and lots of colorful fish.

You can certainly pick up your preferred spot, but generally speaking, people often go to the north area as there are more rocks there and therefore, more chances to see the amazing wildlife that this piece of paradise holds underwater.

If you don’t have your own gear, you can rent it from the locals at Playa Conchal. They’re there on the north side every day from early morning until sunset. Cash is king here, so make sure you have some colones (local currency), or at least dollars on you, as they don’t usually take credit/debit cards.

Jet Skis

One of the most beautiful destinations where you can enjoy this activity in Costa Rica and for sure, the best location in Guanacaste area.

If you don’t feel like walking all the way to Playa Conchal to rent the jet skis, you can also begin your adventure at Playa Brasilito where the locals take them every day anyway to start the day and drive them to Playa Conchal and/or other destinations. You just simply need to coordinate with them in advance.

If you’re more of an explorer, you can also take a guided tour with them to secret local spots and enjoy the breathtaking views of this stunning area.

Kayak and Paddle Board

Due to the calmness and serenity of the ocean in Playa Conchal, which makes it seems more of a bay, visitors enjoy kayaking all around it, from early in the morning to sunset time.

You can also rent them with the locals, but once again, make sure you have some cash on you and avoid relying on credit/debit cards.

Catamaran Tours

Even though you cannot take a catamaran tour exactly from here, most of the catamaran tours that start in Playa Potrero (about 10 minute’s drive) go to Playa Conchal on a daily basis due to its beauty, so you’ll often see a couple of them sailing around and [passing by close to shore, especially during sunset time.

Playa Brasilito

Playa Brasilito and Brasilito downtown in general, are one of the last local neighborhoods in this part of Guanacaste that reminds pretty much intact from the development of the area. It shows how old Costa Rica used to look like.

When you get to the center of town, you’ll see the old soccer field turned into a parking lot for all the visitors who want to go to Playa Conchal and need a place for their vehicles. The parking space is cheap, less than $10 for the day, but it’s cash only, so make sure you have preferable colones (the local currency) on you.

Since the beachfront is “private”, you either stay at the expensive resorts or take a 5-minute walk on the beach from Brasilito downtown.

If you’re visiting during the rainy season (From May to November) make sure to check out the tides beforehand, as sometimes the high tide makes it hard to cross the area where the river meets the ocean. This is not necessary during the dry season, as the river is pretty much dry due to the lack of rain in the area.

Nature

Conchal Natural Reserve, is a breathtaking natural gem that offers a captivating experience for visitors. This pristine reserve is named after its most famous attraction —the shimmering Playa Conchal.

The Conchal Natural Reserve is renowned for its unique landscape, characterized by sparkling white sand composed of crushed seashells. The beach stands out as a picturesque paradise, with crystal-clear turquoise waters inviting visitors to take a refreshing swim or snorkel among vibrant marine life.

The reserve also features lush tropical vegetation, providing a home to an array of fascinating wildlife species. From colorful birds to curious monkeys, nature enthusiasts will have plenty to admire and photograph.

Exploring the Conchal Natural Reserve is an opportunity to connect with nature and unwind in a serene environment. Whether you choose to relax on the pristine beach, take a leisurely stroll along the shore, or simply bask in the beauty of your surroundings, this reserve offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Amazing animals are all over the place in Playa Conchal and may even be on the property at your vacation rental.

  •       Iguanas – Gorgeous iguanas of many colors can be found on the ground and in the trees throughout the area.
  •       Howler Monkeys – They migrate in packs throughout the area. It’s easy to know when they’re near due to their distinctive howl.
  •       Turtles – Some different turtles have been spotted in Playa Conchal, including the endangered Leatherback turtle that nests at Playa Grande. You must be on a guided tour to be on Playa Grande at night during the season, but it’s possible to watch them closely there.
  •       Tropical Birds – You’ll find all kinds of birds in the area including Hummingbirds, Mot Mots, which have distinctive tails, and various parrot species. The local equivalent of a Blue Jay is also ever-present and may beg for crackers if you’re eating outside.
  •       Whales & Dolphins –Dolphins and larger whale species may spout further out in Conchal Bay when they’re around.

Dining

If you’re visiting Playa Conchal, you can either try the local cuisine at the sodas or some more refined dining in some of the nearby restaurants in Brasilito downtown.

Local sodas:

Sodas in Costa Rica are kind of small restaurants, where you can buy basic Tico dishes such as “Gallo pinto” (typical breakfast) and Casado (typical lunch).  Nothing fancy, but if you’re interested in getting a taste of the Costa Rican cuisine, this are good places to do so as the cooks are people from the area and know very well how to prepare the dishes using local ingredients.

You’ll be able to see the local sodas on the main entrance to the beach next to the souvenir shops, and they’re open every day from early in the morning to the evening.

If you love seafood, you’re on the right place as here you can eat the freshest you’ll find and many restaurants offer a variety of dishes including the popular ceviche. You can also purchase directly from the locals if you want to make a seafood meal in your Playa Conchal vacation rental’s kitchen.

Fresh seafood options include:

  •       Red Snapper (Pargo)
  •       Shrimp (Camarón)
  •       Corvina (Seabass)
  •       Mahi Mahi
  •       Tuna (Atún)
  •       Marlin
  •       Clams (Almejas)
  •       Calamari
  •       Octopus (Pulpo)
  •       Mussels (Mejillones)

You’ll also find amazing fresh fruits and vegetables at the local restaurants and supermarkets:

  •       Cantaloupe (Melón)
  •       Watermelon (Sandía)
  •       Beats (Remolachas)
  •       Blackberries (Moras)
  •       Strawberries (Fresas)
  •       Avocados (Aguacates)

In addition to seafood, you’ll find pizza, bar food, juice bars, sushi, fine dining and many other cuisines!
