| Playa Junquillal |
Playa Junquillal is located 35 km west of Santa Cruz City and 45 minutes south of Tamarindo Beach in the Province of Guanacaste . Junquillal is a small village with 3 km of beautiful beaches. The area is considered a wildlife preserve due to moderate development. It offers a great deal of security so visitors and residents can enjoy peace and tranquility.
Janquillal offers many activities such as horse back riding, bird watching, snorkeling, sport fishing, surfing, kayaking, and beautiful, sunny beaches --considered the cleanest in the country.
There is also an abundance of wildlife including monkeys, turtles, and a wide variety of Birds. Besides a dry tropical forest the area is also home to a beautiful mangrove. Tours can be arrainged for a visit to the protected area or to one of the volcanos.
Playa Junquillal is part of the Pacific Leatherback Turtle Conservation Project. The nesting habits of marine turtles and their principal threats have been studied extensively on Junquillal beaches. The investigation was led by Marine Biologist Gabriel Francia of the Programa De Vida Silvestre (PRMVS), at Costa Rica's Universidad Nacional. The Study revealed that after Playa Grande and Langosta, Junquillal is the most important nesting site for leatherbacks in all of Central America.
During the high season (November - April) most villages around Junquillal have local fiestas with bull riding and other attractions for people of all ages. Junquillal has drinkable water, electricity, telephones, mail and internet service.
